Pretty Cage but horrible accessories August 11, 2010 VivianT We have several cages for our mice and hamsters and rabbits. I was excited with the design of this one, but was very disappointed as time went on. The water bottle is useless and has fallen over so many times leaving the hamster without water for the day. The outside wheel stops working every other day so he just stopped using it.
The hamster does love the little bedding area on top and it is easy to clean. We kept it but waver whether to get a different one with less hassle.
Awesome for cleaning, size and layout, some modification required. July 30, 2010 Kellene Killmer I have tried many cages for my four mice, and while this one is far from perfect I find it to be the best, but it required a couple of modifications. I should say that my last cage was the Habitrail OVO for Dwarf Hamsters or Mice, and while it looked awesome and the wheel was totally silent, the water bottle leaked like crazy (and the tube beneath it was not water tight so it leaked onto whatever surface the cage is on), there is VERY little actual "floor space," and since it comes in about 50 pieces and must be disassembled to clean properly, it's a huge pain to clean. It's pretty, but it's pricey and painstaking, and it's what led me to try this CritterTrail cage, which promised easy cleaning.
It keeps that promise. I find this cage to be extremely easy to clean, and I love the amount of open space that my mice have to run around, and I can use large accessories on the bottom level. No other cage system I have tried is nearly as easy to clean as this one is, which makes dual-level living so much easier to deal with. It's the space and ease of cleaning that make it worth looking past the considerable faults and making modifications to make it really workable.
The first negative thing that was immediately evident was the water bottle. It's flimsy, doesn't stay in place, and leaks all over the place, not to mention that when you take it off to fill it there's a hole plenty large enough for a determined mouse to squeeze through. I discarded this bottle altogether, put an endcap over the hole, and bought a good water bottle to attach to the bars on the back. I've noticed that most water bottles that come with CritterTrail cages leave much to be desired.
The second major problem, which showed up within minutes of moving my mice into their new home, is the wheel. It looks great and it's a nice idea to have the wheel outside so it takes up no space inside, but the thing is LOUD, and the tiny little guard around the bottom seam of the wheel does nothing to keep excrement from falling onto the surface below, so within fifteen minutes I realized I had a whole pile of mouse poop on my desk. I tried to alleviate this by buying the external wheel that comes with a little drawer for the excrement, but this fills in no time and can't catch it all anyway, because it flies out from all directions. I ended up placing an endcap on this hole as well, and I bought a small solid-surface wheel that I attached to the bars on the inner right side of the cage, which is the only place where it is possible to do so. I wouldn't recommend this for most hamsters, as it will only accommodate a small wheel, but this is fine for mice. You can however place a much larger, free-standing wheel in the front of the cage, leaving open space behind it. That, I think, would make it suitable for a hamster. The external wheels are absolutely terrible though, I would avoid using them. If you have the space, you could connect it to another cage that has an internal wheel, which would be a luxurious solution.
Despite the design flaws of the accessories, I would still highly recommend this cage if you're willing to fiddle with it a bit, as it makes cleaning a snap and it is very easy to view your pets as they enjoy this habitat.
Great cage, hamster loves it. Terrible water bottle. June 15, 2010 Kimberly I bought this cage for my roborosvki dwarf hamster, and she just adores it. She likes the second level, and the house at the top. She loves the space she has to walk around, and so far hasn't tried to escape through the door. She never used to run in the wheel on her old cage, I thought she just wasn't active. Turns out she just didn't like the wheel, as she runs all the time in the wheel on this cage. She loves running on her wheel now.
I gave it a 4/5 because of a two things.
The water bottle: The water bottle leaked a lot. It wasn't too bad at first, leaking only half in a week. But after I refilled it, the leaking got horrible. The bottle flooded all the water out into her cage in less than 24 hours. This left my hamster without water, and with cold soaked bedding. She refused to leave the house at the top because of this. The vacuum never formed, I even re-read the intructions 5 times with no results. I gave up trying to get it to stop leaking. The hassle finding a water bottle was enough to drive anyone crazy. Most bottles I found were ones that attach inside the cage [Can't do with this cage because of the shelf], or too tall to fit on the outside properly. I ended up buying a Flat-Bac 4oz water bottle which uses a spring instead of the vacuum method, this bottle fits the cage well and doesn't leak.
The wheel: The wheel rattles when my hamster runs. The rattling does get a little annoying sometimes, though. I haven't had any problem with poop flying out like other reviewers have said, though. The rattling isn't too bad of an issue, but it is enough to mention incase some people don't like noisy wheels.
great cage for viewing your hamster June 6, 2010 Robert E. Graham Jr. (USA) All of the issues in the other reviews were the same as mine. The wheel is gross. This is where our hamster "beds" if we do not have the burrowing attachment on. I cannot fit her silent spinner wheel in, so we are coping. I am concerned about how small the wheel is. Ginger, our hamster, seems to be doing a backbend when she runs in it. The wheel and water bottle are difficult to remove and then put back in place. I figured out how to keep the water bottle from leaking-make sure the ball is at the end or very close before turning it upright. I purchased this cage since our aquarium seem to be boring compared to the "fancy" cages. Honestly the aquarium is easier to get to the hamster and enjoy watching her. I wish critter trail would make an attatchment to an aquarium topper. You could see her and still have some cool stuff to keep her from getting bored.
Should not be used with kids May 27, 2010 Kathryn Howell This cage is great in concept but poor in construction. The front latch was extremely difficult for adults and impossible for my 9-year-old son. Needless to say, the latch broke within the 1st month of use. Please don't waste you money on this cage. We have had much better success with other cages from this company.
